5 Common Running Pains (and how to fix them)

Running is an excellent form of exercise. It’s effective, fun, and easy to get started without a lot of equipment or expense. Even though running is beneficial to your body, it can also cause aches and pains from injuries or repetitive movement. You don’t need to be a marathoner to experience running pain. New runners, and even walkers, are also at risk of pain and injury. At Dean Chiropractic & Pain Relief, we help the runners in Cherry Hill and the surrounding area stay pain and injury-free.

Five Most Common Types of Running Pains

Runner’s Knee: Knee pain usually starts with stress to the knee joint and can be felt above and below the patella. Overuse and misalignment can cause swelling, popping, and pain when walking, kneeling, or climbing stairs.

Plantar Fasciitis: Your feet take a pounding while running, and it can result in injury to the tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot. The most common symptom is stabbing heel pain. Plantar fasciitis can feel better when running or moving, but this could make the injury even worse.

Shin Splints: Shin splints occur when repetitive stress is put on the shinbone and is usually felt along the inner of the shin. Running on uneven terrain can also cause shin splints.

IT Band Syndrome: The IT band runs along the outside of the thigh, from the pelvis to the tibia. When this band becomes inflamed due to overuse, runners will usually feel pain along the outside of the knee. This pain is usually at its worst during the heel strike portion of a runner’s stride.

Hip Pain: Overuse and repetitive motion can cause the muscles in the hips to become tight, stiff, and sore. Hip Pain can also occur from bursitis. Bursitis is a condition where the fluid-filled sacs that cushion your hips become irritated.

How to Fix Running Pains

Pain Prevention Through Improved Alignment: If your body is misaligned, your running stride will be uneven. Running is a high impact activity, and misalignment can put extra stress on certain areas, resulting in pain. Our sports chiropractor can improve and correct your body’s alignment to prevent running pains in the future.

Injury Prevention with a Sports Chiropractor: If you run with poor form, you are more likely to sustain an injury. Poor form caused by weaknesses can cause your body to compensate and overuse specific muscles and joints. A sports chiropractor can help with injury prevention by completing functional exams and posture evaluations to identify potential areas of concern. We also offer an optimal sports nutrition system that uncovers and addresses underlying imbalances while improving your body’s full potential and helping you gain the inside edge.

Pain Relief Through Chiropractic Care: If injuries and pain are already getting in the way of your running routine, it’s not too late to see how we can help. Injury rehabilitation, strengthening exercises, and massage treatments can help to diminish the pain tremendously.
